Men and Martinis
 (Girlfriends of Gotham, #1)
 by Delancey Stewart
Publication date: April 15th 2015
Genres: Comedy, New Adult, Romance

It’s 1998…and New York City just might not be prepared for the Girlfriends of Gotham…
Natalie Pepper knows almost nothing about New York City, except that it’s far, far away from her home in California. When she packs up everything she owns and moves there on a whim, luck is on her side. She stumbles into a promising marketing job in the developing Internet industry and finds herself surrounded by poised and polished men who are nothing like the guys she knew back home.
One man stands out from the rest… CJ: All-American hunk and genuine good guy. But they work together, and giving in to their mutual attraction could put Natalie’s sparkly new world at risk. She resolves to look, but not to touch…if she can ignore the feeling that he’s the guy she’s been looking for her whole life.
Natalie’s new friend Candace Kanie has no such concerns. From the barroom to the boardroom, she’s used to getting exactly what she wants, and her no-crap attitude ensures nothing gets in her way. But when she meets Damon, the notorious playboy at Natalie’s company, she finds that her take-no-prisoners style might not be as effective in the romantic realm.
Frustrated and often irrational, Candace pushes for what she wants until something’s gotta give. And when it does, she realizes that the one thing she might not do better than anyone else is change.
The first book about the loves, lives, and laughter of a group of friends finding their way in the city is a laugh-out-loud romantic comedy full of Men and Martinis!

Lulu, Maggie, and I sat at the other end of the bar, sipping cocktails and watching. It took just a few minutes of chatting with Candace, time enough for her to swill her manhattan in a most unladylike manner, for his entire demeanor to shift. He went from leaning forward slightly, no doubt picturing her joining him for the rest of his evening—potentially in his bed, to leaning back, one foot planted on the floor like he was going to try to run away. We couldn’t hear their whole exchange, but Tie Guy’s face gave us enough to fill in the blanks.
I did hear the guy say something about being in finance. Maggie and I looked at each other and cringed. Candace liked nothing better than a competition she could win, and things appeared to be deteriorating. Either he'd made some assumption about her intelligence, or he'd gone ahead and shortened her name without her express permission, because his face now held an expression of abject terror.
“You call this one, Lulu,” Maggie said, sipping her cosmo.
“It's either water polo or the White House fellowship, I think.” Lulu and Maggie had several years of experience watching Candace tear men apart, and she had a few favorite topics that she liked to cover when she did it.
“Why does she do this?” I asked. I’d heard of this man-eating phenomenon having gone on while they were at school, but I’d never witnessed it. I felt like I could sense it inside Candace sometimes—something vicious and self-protective coiled up and ready to attack.
“It’s hard to explain,” Maggie said, turning from where Candace was still ripping the poor guy a new one at the end of the bar. “I think it’s her way of getting validation when she’s not getting it from the right places. She puts people in their place to prove something to herself.”
“Yeah,” Lulu chimed in, looking bored. “Like to prove to herself that she’s a bitch.”
“Lu!” Maggie laughed.
“In a good way, I mean.”
“Does ‘bitch’ mean something different in Brazil?” I asked, laughing but feeling a little protective of my friend.
“No,” Lulu said, shaking her long dark hair. “But it’s not an insult. Every woman needs a little bitch inside.”
“Candace just got more than most,” Maggie said, leaning in close with an evil grin on her face. “That’s why we love her. She helps teach us to stand up for ourselves.”
I thought about that for a minute. I pictured us each like a lab beaker, filled with different amounts of various elements. A little thoughtfulness, some insecurity, a bit of each little thing that makes up a personality in full. Maybe I could use a bit more bitch. I kind of admired Candace for it.
