Hello! I’m Samantha Grace, author of the historical romance series Rival Rogues. Yesterday the second book in the series, IN BED WITH A ROGUE, was released and I couldn’t be more excited to share this story with everyone. I love creating characters! It’s probably my favorite part of writing a book. And Baron Sebastian Thorne and Lady Helena Prestwick are two of my favorites.
Authors have many different processes for developing characters. I know some start with a visual image aka a photo. Some may write one scene that comes to them and that scene solidifies the character in their minds. Some just start writing and get to know their characters along the way. For me, I can’t start writing until I know my characters’ background stories.
I’m sure my day job as a social worker/counselor plays a role in my approach. It has been the best job ever for learning I can’t judge a person based on what I see and hear alone. Sometimes the most powerful meaning behind their actions and words lies in their history.
For example, once I was talking with someone who seemed very focused on money and having his accomplishments acknowledged. On the surface, he came across as a bit shallow. Someone eavesdropping might have labeled him as too tight with money, but when he opened up about his past, he opened my eyes and heart.
His father struggled with addiction and left his mother to raise him and his siblings alone. She had to work several jobs to support them, and they barely scraped by. When his father returned many years later, he was very ill and ended up dying in a nursing home without a penny to his name. My client hadn’t chosen his course in life because he valued money over everything else. He wasn’t greedy or shallow. He had a strong desire not to end up like his father and he had accomplished his aim. Funny how one’s perspective can change once she knows what another person has been through in his or her life.
Therefore, the most important factor in developing characters for my books comes from understanding what has happened to them in their lives. What important events or people shaped who they are as grown-up characters? My process involves writing a short history for the character, and occasionally I’ll write a scene from the character’s past so I can see it playing out in front of me. That’s exactly what I did with Sebastian, and you can click here to read a scene from his time at Eton.
Once the history is complete, a little visual inspiration doesn’t hurt either. Someone posted a photo of this lovely gentleman on Facebook and I was definitely inspired.
