HELL WITHOUT YOU

Time changes everything, except what’s meant to be.

Seven years is a long time – long enough to transform Clementine from a small-town teenager with a broken heart into a woman ready to take on the world, but not long enough to make her forget about the man she was never supposed to see again. A temporary return to tiny Willow Heights thrusts her back into Donovan’s life and home, unearthing heartbreak and obsession that have stood the test of time.

He left seven years ago too, for war and other things Clementine can only imagine. Coming back to the town where he grew up in the shadow of poverty and drug addiction makes no sense, and neither do Clementine’s feelings for him. He could never forgive her for leaving, could he? Even if she had no choice.

Now, she has the freedom to choose … and so does he. Every day in Willow Heights makes it clearer: all he ever really wanted was her, and nothing will change that. Not even a taste of the hell that drove them apart in the first place.

Coming Home: Why I Love this Romance Theme
There’s no doubt about it – I love a good book where a character’s homecoming is essential to the heart of the story. Take my favorite book of all time, for example – Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. It’s perhaps the ultimate coming home story.
In general, I’m fascinated by the theme of characters returning home after a prolonged – perhaps dramatic – absence, and I think I know why.
I’ve moved frequently throughout my life, and in my opinion, this gets old. When you’re very young, you’re pretty flexible, but as you get older, always uprooting or being shuffled around … it’s just not my thing. (Well, actually it seems like it is, I just don’t like it being my thing. LOL) I’ve spent a lot of my time living in regions I’m not from, feeling disconnected from my living location and the communities around me. I personally relish the thought of having the experience of coming home to a familiar place and having a permanent home there. Or at least, just finding a place I really like and settling down.
Though that’s not something that’s in the cards for me at this time, I enjoy exploring it on behalf of my characters. This idea is part of what inspired me to write Hell Without You, a coming home story where events are set into action by two characters’ return to their hometown.
Of course, unlike I hope my own would be, my characters’ coming home experience is bitter-sweet. Bitter because their hometown harbors both good and bad – in some cases, very bad – memories, and certain dangers. Sweet because it’s where they’re reunited, and their romance is given a chance to be rekindled.
What about you – have you read any good romances with a homecoming theme? If so, please share. I’m always on the lookout for a good read.
